Cordialement, Susan Fast, Secr?taire aux Abonnements I would like to extend an invitation to you and your colleagues to join the Canadian branch of the International Association for the Study of Popular Music. IASPM has been an important part of the popular music landscape since the early 1980s, bringing together scholars who study popular music from all disciplinary and interdisciplinary perspectives. We're witnessing a period of dramatic and exciting growth in the field of popular music studies and IASPM continues to make significant contributions to the field. IASPM Canada is one of a large number of branches of this organization; it links together those interested in popular music studies in a network of over 36 countries in North America, Latin America, Europe, and Australia. Like other branches, IASPM Canada combines scholarship with activism and includes musicians and journalists, as well as academics, in the dialogue. The major event for IASPM Canada is the annual conference, which in recent years has grown considerably. Two years ago, the conference was held at the University of Regina, and included a roundtable panel entitled "Perspectives on Contemporary Indigenous Popular Music" with well-known Canadian artist Kinnie Starr. Last year, IASPM Canada and IASPM US met jointly in Boston. Every second year there is an international conference that brings together members from all branches; the most recent of these took place in Mexico City in 2007. This year the IASPM Canada conference will take place at Brock University from May 9-11. The theme of this year's conference is "Popular Music and Popular Culture: Intersections and Histories." The plenary speaker is Carl Wilson, an editor and critic at _The Globe and Mail_, and author of _Let's Talk About Love: A Journey to the End of Taste_, a book about mass culture, social class, aesthetic judgment and Celine Dion. Wilson's writing has appeared or is upcoming in The New York Times, Slate, Blender, Pitchfork, The Nation, and elsewhere. A complete program and other information can be found at: http:// www.iaspm.ca/conference2008.htm Membership fees for IASPM Canada are very modest: $20/year for students and $40/year for professionals. You can join by going to: www.iaspm.ca and clicking on "Become a Member." If you have any questions, please do not hesitate to contact me. We look forward to welcoming you to IASPM Canada.
